Day 2 Gorilla Tracking

After breakfast, In the company of an experienced park ranger you will be tracking the whereabouts of one of the habituated family groups who live in the park. Depending on the location of the gorillas on any given day the walk can take anything from 2 to 7 hours. Once the family of gorillas has been located, settle in to your surroundings and enjoy the hour you have to quietly observe these fascinating primates whose habits and mannerisms remind us so much of our own. It is a real hiking and being physically fit is recommended.

Day 3Optional Activities

The following optional activities are available for today;

  • Batwa Cultural Trail. Local guides take you through the 8km gentle trail in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, demonstrating the traditional ways of life of the Batwa people. The trail culminates with a moving performance in the Garama Cave, an important spiritual and cultural site for the Batwa.
  • Golden monkey tracking. These small monkeys are fast and live in groups of about 30 individuals or more roaming over a large territory in the virunga volcanoes.
  • All three volcanoes in this park can be summited, taking a full day each. Views from the peaks are well worth the effort – taking in Rwanda, DR Congo, the Virungas, the Rwenzoris, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Lake Edward
  • The best birding in Mgahinga also takes in some of its most beautiful scenery – in the gorge between Mts Gahinga and Sabinyo, through the bamboo forest, and in the montane forest, where the beautiful Rwenzori Turaco may be observed.
