Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, is an island sanctuary in Uganda, dedicated to the care of orphaned chimpanzees, that have been rescued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Many of the chimpanzees were rescued from illegal pet and bushmeat trade and are unlikely to survive reintroduction to the wild.

The island was founded in 1998. It offers 95 acres of natural forest where the chimps roam and forage daily. The sanctuary is open all year round to visitors who pay a nominal entrance fee to view to observe the feeding of the chimps from a viewing platform. Day and overnight visits (staying in luxury tents) are available.

Itinerary

Day 1 Travel to Ngamba Island

Our representative will pick you up from the hotel and drive to the Entebbe pier on the shores of Lake Victoria. The trip to the island is 45 minutes by a speed boat. Upon arrival, you will receive a personal orientation by a chimpanzee caregiver and view the feeding of the chimpanzees from the visitors’ raised platform area along the edge of the sanctuary fence.

Day 2Ngamba Island Forest walk & Chimpanzee Trekking

After breakfast at the Ngamba Restaurant make sure you have approved medical requirements as you start off with the forest walk looking for chimpanzees and later take part in the Chimp environmental enrichment program which will involve you to challenge the chimps’ critical thinking abilities as to help them stay health, physically and mentally. In the afternoon visit the neighboring communities.

Day 3Departure

View a chimp feeding then depart for Entebbe. This is the end of the tour however, it is possible to include an additional day on this itinerary with an option to experience the following optional activities; Birding in Mabamba Swamp or Lutembe Bay, visit Uganda Wildlife Education Center, visit Entebbe Botanical Gardens, relax at Ssese Islands.
