The Mabira is one of Uganda’s largest surviving Natural Forest areas, covering about 300sq km. It has been protected as a Forest Reserve since 1932. The forest is a Natural Habitat of 312 species of trees, home to 315 species of Birds, 218 Butterfly Species, 97 Moth Species, and 23 Small Mammal Species.
Mabiira Forest boasts 74 of the 144 species of the Guinea-Congo Forests biome that occurs in Uganda. The forest has well-established trails that include the Red-tailed Monkey, Turaco, and the Buttress trails will ease life for you in your search for Nahan’s Francolin which is an IUCN Red list’ endangered species. Other birds include Tit Hylia, Yellow and grey long bill, Purple-throated cuckoo shrikes, Illadopsises, Jameson’s wattle eyes. 46% of Uganda’s forest birds can easily be seen in Mabira than any other forest in Uganda.
The most popular primate tracked in the forest is the Mangabey, a grey-cheeked primate that is unique to Uganda. Other primates include Baboons, Colubus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys. Mammals include fruit-tailed bats, bush pigs, duikers, and the occasional Leopard. (very rare)

Our representative will pick you up from the hotel and drive you to the forest. Although isolated by the surrounding banana and sugar plantations, this remarkably productive forest is possibly the richest in the country, and well-maintained trails make birding easy.
Mixed flocks are often found along the broad tracks, and noisy groups of the near-endemic Weyn’s Weaver, arguably the most attractive of the group, busy themselves in the canopy. We can also hope to see African Pied Hornbill and Forest Wood-Hoopoe, while the seasonal pools can attract Blue-breasted, White-bellied, Dwarf, and Shining-blue Kingfishers. Yellow-throated and Speckled Tinkerbirds live in the canopy and Toro Olive Greenbul and Green-tailed Bristle bill is secretive interior inhabitants. If there are safari ants on the march, Fire-crested Alethe, Forest Robin, and Blue-shouldered Robin-Chat may be in attendance, the rare Tit Hylia is many a time viewed, Yellow-Billed, Yellow Spotted and Hairy Breasted Barbets are seen among others. The elusive Purple Throated, Olive Green, Jameson’s Wattle-eye, Grey, and Yellow Longbill will be among our targets while birding here, African Paradise and red Bellied paradise flycatchers, Tambourine Dove, White-Breasted and Grey-Headed Negrofinch, and many more.
